Our focusA majority of the members of our research group have a special interest in exploring issues related to language contact and attrition through the unique empirical lens offered through varieties of German in multilingual speakers and communities across the lifespan. We are actively engaged in documenting and researching these German vernaculars spoken in various parts of the world, with a primary focus on heritage German spoken in the Midwestern United States. In addition to research on heritage variants of German (also commonly referred to as Sprachinseln), we have an additional interest in variation and change underway in other varieties of German in contact, such as urban youth language and newly developing regional variation in European varieties of German.
